My time at the University of Waterloo has finally come to an end. I started on the 13th of September and had my last exam yesterday, with only about 5 weeks holiday. It's been well worth coming though.

I am staying in Waterloo maybe until Tuesday when I'll go off to Toronto, then Ottawa, Montreal and start to head out to the west. We never had time to go to Vancouver Island when my sister and I went to Vancouver before so I would like to go there this time. I'll get a 30 day Greyhound ticket and use it to travel overnight saving on accomodation.

Still got a year to do at Heriot-Watt when I get home.

For Canada Day, July 1st - the commemoration of the forming of the country - the Germans, some other people and I went to Ottawa, the centre of the country's celebrations. Parliament Hill was the main focus with thousands of people on the lawn and the street around watching the performances on the stage. Flags everywhere.

At night there was a fireworks display so David, Arne and I went across the river (into Quebec province) to be able to watch and take pictures with the Houses of Parliament in as well. They lasted around 15 minutes and were quite nice though the fact that 2 went off a good half hour before the rest kind of ruined the effect.
Coming back across the river into Ottawa, and every pub or club had a massive line up.

The weather was pretty hot and we had a brief thunderstorm.

We stayed in University of Ottawa residences so of course had an early morning fire alarm, 6am. Saturday was spent in the war museum which was quite interesting even though it exagerated Canada's influence in the turnout of all the wars they were involved in.

Wonderland

UW Crew organised a trip to Wonderland yesterday so I went and met up with Zubair there. We went on quite a few roller coasters and rode the bumber cars a fair few times where I beat the hell out of Zubair. He only stayed for a few hours but it was great seeing him.
There is a bridge over the log flume which gets you completely soaked through. We stood watching the water heading for us at least 7 times. It impacts with quite some force unlike on the ride itself. In the over 30 degree weather it was quite relieving, Zubair even saying that he's going to go there for his breaks (he works at Wonderland).

To get there we had to ride a yellow school bus which was quite exciting for me yet normal for everyone else on the bus. I think they said there were about 240 people went.

Halifax

As I had enough travel left on my rail pass I took a couple of days off uni and went to Halifax, Nova Scotia. There wasn't much to see and the weather was much the same as in Scotland (Nova Scotia = New Scotland), cold wet and windy but I enjoyed it and I am very glad I got out to the East coast.
When I arrived I walked along the waterfront and there was a Spanish tallship open for tourists so I went on and had a look. In the evening I joined a walking tour of the city and learned much of the history, it was very interesting so I think I may do similar things when I am in other cities in August/September. The following morning I went to the Citadel and had a tour of that then slowly made my way round the city to the train station.
I was worried I was going to miss my train in because I fell asleep after the party and woke up at 8:45 - my train left Kitchener at 9:11.

As a move in party, we decided to have a 'kegger'
which is a party that you buy a few kegs of beer and charge entry for people to drink as much as they like. It wasn't too bad but I was quite bored most of the time. It was funny watching Volker and Stefan dancing but the video is too big to upload.

Between the 2nd and 3rd term my sister Tracey and I went to Vancouver by train. It takes 3 days to get there and 3 days to get back so because of the way Tracey had arranged her flights we only had 2 and a half days in the city. Left Toronto on the 21st and got on the 29th.
The way in was great because there were lots of cool people to talk to and play cards and in the observation dome thing there was a very friendly atmosphere with everyone looking out for bears and moose, pointing out anything that moved and talking to each other. There were a few bears spotted but neither Tracey or I saw any, we did both see moose, bald eagles and a helluva lot of deer.
It was a holiday very much dominated with my relentless attempts of making up for not getting the sunset picture I wanted in New York. We spent a day in Stanley Park and after going to the acquarium in there we went to the beach to wait for the sun to set over the Pacific Ocean. I got some pictures I am quite happy with.
Day 2 we went to North Vancouver on the other side of the bay from downtown where we went over the Capalino suspension bridge - which was pretty damn expensive for what it is - and then up Grouse Mountain to the grizzly bear sanctuary to make up for our not seeing any bears from the train. We again waited up there for the sun to go down for me to take my pictures. It worked out well as we both got to do what we wanted.
On the final day we just wandered round the city centre and made our way to the train station, this was before sundown so no pictures.
The train back was quite boring as there was no one my age group; there were many kids and older people and the dome car never had the atmosphere it did on the way in. We were both exhausted but because it was busier we had to share the double seat and so couldn't sleep as well.

Before we went I showed Tracey round Toronto: wandered round downtown, went in Casa Loma, met up with Kjetil and had dinner in China-Town, did some shopping in the Eaton Centre and went up the CN Tower at night. And when we got back from Vancouver we went to Niagara Falls to ride Maid of the Mist during the day and see the falls by night.

Took a break from studying to go see Ash in Toronto. Unfortunately they came on around 23:15 and the last bus to Waterloo leaves at 23:30. I had hoped I'd get at least 45 minutes but becauase the first support band came on at 21:00 and were on for about 45 minutes (I figured they'd come on at 20:30 and be on for half an hour) I only got about 3 minutes before I had to shoot off.

London Calling

Kjetil had the idea of going to London, Ontario for something to do and the fool that I am I said ok.There's not really much there though it is on the River Thames, has a Covent Garden and a Hyde Park which I didn't actually see.
On the way in, I saw a sign for Krispy Kreme which I have been told are the best doughnuts around so after getting off the bus we went off in search for it. Couldn't find it so walked back into the city and found somewhere else selling their doughnuts. They are very good! Much better than Tim Hortons but that's not hard. Very much the highlight of the trip, bought a dozen between us. There's apparently a Krispy Kreme in Kitchener so I may try and find it when I get round to buying the new tyre for my bike.

The Statue of Liberty is really wee

By the way, for anyone not lucky enough to have seen it, the title is a quote from Father Ted one of the finest comedies ever. It was a cruel injustice that it never made it into the top 10 of BBC's top British sitcoms while The Vicar of Dibley did.

Went to New York City this weekend and it was pretty cool, saw so much yet there was so much more that I didn't see. There were 10 of us going in 2 cars and we left on Wednesday at about 7pm and arrived around 7am taking an hour at the border even though there was no one else there. Because of their messing up so many countries and getting themselves a few enemies, the Americans now need fingerprints and a photograph of everyone entering the country. We stopped for 10 minutes or so before going to the border to see Niagara Falls illuminated at night.

First thing we did in the city was go up the Empire State Building, which gave a very good view of the whole city. Had a wander around the city seeing different sights; Grand Central Station seeing some fencing on the steps to the public library on the way there (New York has a bid for the 2012 olympics and this was part of their display to the IOC judges); Times Square; a little bit of Central Park; back to Times Square for some night pictures and on to China Town for dinner.

Started the second day by going to see where the World Trade Center used to be. It was a very weird feeling when you think about the events that happened a few years ago, so many people dying around where I was standing. Went further into the Financial District to see the workings of the New York Stock Exchange but it is no longer accessible to the public for fears of terrorist attacks so that was quite annoying.

Got a ferry out to Staten Island to get a closer view of the Statue of Liberty and a view of all the skyscrapers of downtown Manhattan. The Statue of Liberty is really wee, in films it always looks so big so it was a bit of a let down, I don't think we were even all that far away from it. The view of Manhattan was great though.

After getting back to Manhattan on the next ferry from Staten Island we went over the Brooklyn Bridge to Brooklyn. Kjetil and I left the rest of the group and we went wandering around Brooklyn, soon finding ourselves in the Jewish area, we could tell by all the Hebraic writing and the people dressed in Jewish attire.

Went back to Central Park to get some pictures of the skyscrapers at night. We were supposed to be meeting the others in the Museum of Modern Art but because I took so long in Central Park we got there just too late and took the opportunity to have a quick look round the museum (it was free!) Little Italy for dinner and after getting on the wrong subway and ending up in Brooklyn at night, with a couple of people there that did make it a tad scarey, we went back to the hostel.

Another day wandering around with Kjetil, all I wanted to do was to get a picture of the sun setting over Brooklyn bridge and the skyscrapers of the Financial District so I let Kjetil decide where to go all day. Went in the cathedral - the biggest in North America; wandered around a couple of residential areas - West Village and SoHo; through China Town and back to where Kjetil wanted to go on Brooklyn when we were there before, Williamsburg because in the guide book it said about some "creative use of delapodated buildings" which sounded quite interesting. I never got my photo - thought it would be good going up the next bridge from Brooklyn Bridge but the path on that side of the bridge was closed and couldn't really get a shot from the side we went on. At least we weren't late for meeting up with everyone else this time.

I went back up the Empire State Building with someone who missed it before so I was able to see it at night too. It was much better this time but because they don't allow tripods up, only a couple of my photos worked out. Finished the night by going to a comedy club where only the host and 2 of the 5 comics were very funny.

Crossing the border back into Canada took a few minutes and they treated us as people not as suspects. The security in New York were all dicks, try to sit down where they were fine with you standing and they'll be on you in seconds telling you to stand up. Happened to Kjetil 3 times I think.

Ottawa

I had to spend a night in a jail in Ottawa - the hostel is in the old county jail and is said to be the most haunted building in the country. They use the cells as the bedrooms, it's pretty cool

Ottawa is Canada's national capital and home to the world's longest skating rink, the Rideau canal which I skated all the way along this weekend. I suppose it can only really make that claim in the Winter other times its just a canal. We left in the wee hours of Saturday morning, about 4am and arrived at about half past 10 and after checking in at the hostel, went straight for the ice.
I only went along it fully one way - stopped halfway on the way back so that I could walk with a group through the city a little. Was on it for about 4 and a half hours in a tshirt for most of the time, anything above zero now feels warm!

While everyone else went to a club at night I went round taking a few pictures.

These are all parliamentary buildings but the actual Houses of Parliament is the one with the knock off of Big Ben

On the way back to the hostel I went through where they hold the ice sculpture competition, they weren't finished but still looked really nice. Some had started melting quite badly when I went back in the afternoon.

I just realised I should have said something about the new guy. He's new, well he's been here since the start of term so he's not that new. I don't know much other than that his name is Ricky, he's from Hong Kong and studies physics.

Thoughts on Travelling

I've been wondering lately where I want to go, I've got my reading days in February which I might use to go to Ottawa for the Winterlude festival and just under a fortnight in April/May which I might use to go to either New York or Vancouver. I wouldn't need to spend all the holiday in the one place though so I'll look into which has the most places around it that I'd be able to go to. Vancouver has Seattle just over the border so I should think it would be quite easy to get to on a Greyhound or train and I'd quite like to go to Seattle to see the Space Needle. I don't know what else there is around that area, I think I could manage at least 3 places and have enough time in each place to get some good pictures and see around the nicer parts of the city. They are both areas which I think I will get to at some point in my time here, it's just a case of when, unfortunately they are on opposite sides of the continent.
There's also the thought running through my head of flying to Los Angeles and going to Coachella festival. I have no idea who is playing but I'd have a great time whoever it is. Problem is cost and also lectures begin the day after.
I've also been wondering what I'll do in August when I've finished studying here. Lawrence told me that Greyhound do a bus that runs from Vancouver down the west coast and to Arizona and then back up to New York. It would take a week and cost $250. If I;m able to break up the journey, then this sounds like a good idea for me to do since I have so little time (only one month) to see so many places. If I could get a bus that runs overnight, it would even save me the cost of a hostel. I might send Greyhound an email asking whether this journey exists or not and asking for more details. I also need to get myself some sort of a guide book for North America because I don't know what anywhere has to offer, though I think since I got my camera, my main criteria has become whether I'll be able to take some nice pictures.

Edit: I looked it up on the Greyhound website and a 30day ticket valid in both Canada and America costs US$407 so I think that will be the way to go in August.
I also looked up about Winterlude festival but it finishes before my reading days, I'll have to go one weekend then. There is a canal which since its frozen gets used as a skating rink, 7.8km.

The English cleared the snow off a section of the lake and by the time I got there with my camera, Gav had finished with my skates so I was able to have a go. It was very cold but enjoyable also, shall most likely be out there again soon.

The first week we stayed in a chalet in Lac Carre, near Mont Tremblant and went skiing/snowboarding. I was among the snowboarders, it was my first time and after the snow was ruined by a downpour of rain I didn't really enjoy it - falling on ice was painful and frequent - though I did enjoy taking pictures from the top of the hill, Mont Blanc.

For Christmas Eve we went out to the Mont Tremblant resort for dinner.

Christmas Day was spent on the slopes which were rather busy. On Boxing day Jessie, one of the other Heriot-Watt exchange students was taken to hospital after she lost control skiing and hit a tree, she broke her leg in 2 places. She is still there with her parents who flew out to see her.

The rest of us moved on to Quebec City on the 28th of December where we stayed for 3 nights. It's a beautiful city. I took my ice skates so I was able to go skating on the small outdoor rink for an hour with Lawrence, Fabio and Jutta.

Stayed in Montreal for 2 nights from Hogmanay until the 2nd of January. I can't say I was too impressed with it. Saying that, I did have a good time at the rock club we went to to bring in the new year (though wherever we were we were going to have a good time with the number of us) and it was quite a nice view from the top of Mont Royal, the hill in the city.

Christmas Holidays :D

I am done with my exams and am on holiday. I think that apart from that stats one they all went reasonably well but i should forget about that now, I'm on holiday and will be snowboarding for my first time tomorrow. Spending a week in a chalet with 20 or so other internationals near Mont Tremblant, an hour north of Montreal, which itself is about 7 hours or something away from here, and then a couple of days in Quebec city and back to Montreal for Hogmanay.
Got to get all my stuff packed and ready to go.

So Unbelievably Cold

I had an exam today and to get to it, I had to walk in minus 28.7 degrees. I dont know what it was with the windchill but I think someone said minus 40. I was sat in the exam hall and I could barely write for the first 10 minutes or so, my hands were so cold. It felt even worse on the way home. Still I hope this means we're going to get a lot of snow for the snowboarding which I'm leaving for tomorrow and will hopefully be doing on Wednesday! :D

It's really cold outside so I decided I'd brave it in shorts and tshirt and ok I have long socks on but they're not very thick so dont do much to keep the legs warm. Zubair was too chicken to come out so he took a picture from the door. I was only out for about a minute.

Only 2 more days! Joey has already finished and he's going home today.

Congratulations John & Mala! I wish I could have been there for your wedding. I hope it went well and you both had a fantastic time. I look forward to seeing the pictures from it and also I'll see you when I get back.

Exams

I have never come out of an exam as unsure of whether or not I passed it as with Stats 333 - Applied Probability. The one on Friday Stats 330 - Mathematical Statistics - was fine and since I had covered all the material at Heriot Watt, I will be quite annoyed if I haven't done very well. This other one though, the questions are asked in such a way that you don't know what they're asking so I have no clue whether what I put down was what she wanted or not, I really hope it was. Nothing I can do about it now though, there had better be a different lecturer if I do resit it; this one was absolutely terrible.
2 more to go and then I'm off to Tremblant :D They are relatively straight forward but I messed up a midterm for one of them so that's going to drag me down a bit.

Kris' Ringette

Ringette is a game like hockey in so much as it's played on ice and you score into a goal. Obvious differences lie in the fact that it's not a puck being passed around but some sort of a ring and instead of sticks with some sort of a head, its just a stick as if the head had been sawn off which is put within the ring. There are other differences, some more subtle than others, in the rules.
I went with Maggie and her ex who is in Canada for a hockey tournament so he was able to compare it (I don't think he was impressed but didn't want to offend Kris) to see Kris, a girl from our class, play.

Classes are finally over but now I suppose I'm going to have to start revising. Just over 2 weeks and I'll be off to Mont Tremblant

Such a funny guy. He did a Q&A and signing session in Toronto so I went through and never embarrassed myself though my hands were shaky and couldn't hold the camera still. I had to wait outside for a couple of hours but it wasn't overly cold, it will perhaps harden me to whats to come, and meant I was 3rd in the queue so got to be at the front.
Since Jas told me to, I asked why he only went as far north in the UK as Manchester not going up to Scotland. He said he would have liked to have gone to Scotland but since he didn't have a say in where he went, he just agreed to do it, he didn't go to Scotland. He said that he has done shows in more places in Scotland than in England and promised to go back there soon.
When he was signing my dvds he asked what I thought of Gaelic programmes being shown on the TV, I told him that it's only an hour or so a week on the BBC so it only pissed me off when it meant The Simpsons wasn't on when the English got it, apart from that I think it's a good thing. It's our own language and it would be a shame for it to die. I don't know a word of it but I would like to. There's even a Gaelic BBC Radio station now

I bought a cheap tripod so after I left HMV I went to try it out and took a few photos of Toronto, or TO as they say, at night.

Aurora Borealis

The first snow and the northern lights but more importantly new Simpsons all in one night! How great is that?There are several things I wanted to do and see while I'm here, some I expect to and some I don't, I thought I'd be too far south to be able to see the aurora but it was certainly on the list. Jess phoned me and told me the lights could be seen but by the time I got out, I had missed it. When I got back I looked out my window and it was snowing so back round to Jessie's to tell her. The snow stopped and the clouds cleared, allowing once again the lights to be seen. It was a marvelous sight. We stayed out for almost an hour until the aurora stopped.

Delgados in Toronto

Absolutely amazing and I was on the guestlist so it was free! The support came from Crooked Fingers who I hadn't heard of but he was really good, the crowd seemed to his songs which always makes it better. He played mainly an acousic set as the rest of his band were back in Seattle.

The Delgados themselves were ace, playing a nice mix of older songs and ones from the new album Universal Audio. There was an aftershow party which I had been invited to where I met the band and got them to sign my flag. Emma, guitarist/vocals, out of nowhere gave me a signed lp of Universal Audio.

Algonquin Provincial Park

Went camping in Algonquin Park a few hours north of Toronto with Kjetil (it's pronounced shettle, he's Norwegian) and Warren (Australian) for 2 nights. There were supposed to be more but the other aussies fell out with Warren and have now actually moved out so it's now just Jess and Warren in 37.
It's the peak colour weekend, unfortunately the weather didn't realise that when we were walking along the trails; It was raining slightly, not enough to make it uncomfortable to walk through but it did make the views less spectacular although still very nice but it didn't show in the pictures.

It cleared up after we had finished walking around and we were able to get out on the canoe on 2 River Lake beside our capsite. I expected us to capsize so I didn't take my camera out, we didn't and we made it to the island.

Lighting the fire was fun. It took lots of time and lots of wood. Kjetil managed to get lost going to fetch some more from a straight 20m walk away, it was quite worrying until he showed up from another direction with a bag of kindling over 20 minutes later.
Back out in the canoe on Sunday but this time on Canoe Lake. We landed a couple of times at points which it looked like we could stop and not come back to find we had no canoe.

We never saw any animals which when you're camping can be a good thing but hoped to see some bears or moose when we were out in the car, some beautiful scenery though. Came back and finished the weekend off by going to the pho shop for pad thai while the other 2 both had pho.

Happy Birthday Me!

20 today, no longer a teenager. Number 37 (Jessie's house) threw me a quiet party at theirs which was nice of them. Even gave me a cake, an oreo cake - mmmmmmmmmmm.

We went out for lunch at the Mongolian Grill which was very nice. Jess and Maggie gave me a UW hoodie.

Wasn't the best I've seen them but still an absolutely ace gig. The steward made me put my camera in the cloakroom so I never got many pictures but I did get one of Jess and me with Gary Lightbody after the show! :D He also signed my lion rampant flag. He said they'd be back in April sort of time with some new songs, make a nice change from the pretty much the same songs each time I've seen them.

Saturday was a gorgeous day so we went up the CN Tower and could see the whole city.

It could be used as a giant sundial; People are scared to step onto the glass floor but apparently the whole of that level is glass but thats the only part witout carpet on!

Also went on a boat tour of the islands.

All in all, a fantastic weekend!

Everyone has now moved in and they all seem alright. There's another exchange student, Barry, he studies actuarial maths and is from Hong Kong and 2 Canadians; both from Missisauga not far from Toronto, Zubair who is in pre-optometry/pre-health and Joey who studies kinesiology.

Classes start tomorrow, got a problem with the timetable though so I'm not sure what it is yet. I've been enrolled for some subjects but Margaret has seen the woman about our exchange and has been enrolled in different things. They've both had a right hard time with getting things sorted out, most of it was ok for me :)

Niagara Falls

Well my flatmates aren't moved in yet but Jessie's have and they invited us and Maggie to go to Niagara Falls. We rented a car and Warren drove.
The falls were very impressive, so big and wet which when you get right up close on Maid of the Mist you can appreciate a bit more.

I made it and it's really hot. Why is this? Canada is supposed to be cold. I never expected arctic conditions yet but still no one told me it would be hot.
